A roof box, bike rack or ski rack should should be chosen with care. There are different things to keep in mind when making a purchase, but also when using a roof-mounted transport system.
Roof racks
A roof box or other transport equipment on the roof must be anchored to the roof bars. There are different solutions ranging from the original roof bars on the car to those that can be attached to the car’s attachment points (if it has them). This will determine the type of attachment. It is useful to find this out from the dealer. If necessary, it may be useful to request a demonstration and try the system on your car. Do not overlook the maximum permitted weight limits on the roof and the maximum carrying capacity of the roof bars.
Roof boxes
Roof boxes vary in terms of size and quality. There are even 'soft' models. In any case, its length must not exceed the roof so much that it impedes the visibility and balance of the car. The material of the box will affect weather protection, fuel consumption (total weight) and theft protection. The shape also affects aerodynamics and fuel consumption. The type of opening will affect the ease of access and loading and unloading, which should not be overlooked.
Bike racks
A bike rack on the roof is the safest option. But it’s not the easiest way to attach and remove bicycles, especially with a tall car. It also greatly increases wind resistance and overall vehicle height. Another reliable solution is a towbar-mounted bike rack. These make it easier to attach and remove bicycles, but reduce rear view from the rear view mirror. Please note that transporting a bicycle on a carrier installed on the tailgate or tow bar is prohibited in Portugal. In Spain and Italy, this type of equipment must be marked with a special sign (red and white) to be placed at the rear of the car on the bike rack.
Ski racks
A ski rack must be suitable for both the number of skis (or monoskis or snowboards) to be transported and the size of the vehicle. Adequate strength of the ski attachment and holding system is essential. A magnetic ski carrier should always be avoided, as it may come loose. It is best to use a system attached to roof bars.
Pitfalls
Take the vehicle's height into account when placing loads onto the roof. This is particularly important when accessing car parks, in areas with limited height and for motorway tolls. Even with a roof box, a car generally pays the price of a car, at motorway tolls, at no extra cost. However, due to the overall height, the detection system could generate the incorrect price, so make sure to check the amount before paying. However, there often is an additional price for ferries or for transport by rail (train + car). Finally, fuel consumption increases significantly when there is a load on the roof. Remember to remove this equipment as soon as it is no longer needed.
