You want an electric car. It requires a charging point that is convenient on a daily basis. You can install a charging point at home or in your car park. This type of equipment allows charging up to 5 times faster than when you charge your vehicle using a simple power socket. What’s more, you benefit from a significant increase in convenience since you no longer need to worry about whether or not the public charging point near your home is available and you simply plug in your vehicle in the evening so that it is fully charged and ready to use the next morning. But be aware: there are a few things to keep in mind.

There are three types of electrical grid to which your home can be connected: three phase 400V, three phase 230V and single phase 230V. This will have an impact on the type of charging point to be installed, the required amperage and the maximum available power. And therefore on the charging speed. However, it is generally possible to install equipment with a power of at least 7.4kW (10h30 to charge 70kWh). The ideal solution is to be able to rely on 11kW (6h30 to charge 70kWh).

A premium is available for the installation of a charging point in Belgium, but only for “smart” charging points. A smart charging point is able to modulate the load according to tariffs or peak consumption. It can also prioritise the energy in your solar panels to reduce paid electricity consumption. It should also be noted that companies can benefit from 100% deductibility for the purchase and installation of a charging point for electric vehicles in the workplace.

Always use a professional electrician for the installation of the charging point and the adaptation of the domestic electricity network. The grid manager may also need to be involved. Your charging point can be installed in your garage or on your private parking spot. For the installation of a charging point in a shared car park, particularly that of an apartment complex, you must take the necessary steps to inform the joint owners and the syndicate.
